The Beach Co. has begun construction on a new apartment complex in Dorchester County at the intersection of Dorchester Road and Highway 17A.

Summer Wind will have 267 Class A units, with studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments available. Development manager Alan McMahon declined to disclose the cost of the project.

McMahon said The Beach Co. was interested in building mainly because the location is near multiple employers, including the future Volvo plant, BoschBoeing and Joint Base Charleston. He said the area also has a good school district for families with children.

“That area continues to grow and we think it will exponentially with the arrival of Volvo and its suppliers and all the other employment growth that’s going on,” McMahon said.

Amenities at the apartment complex will include a 1-acre park in the middle of the community, an outdoor kitchen, a fire pit, a carwash and detached garages.

The apartment will have 10-gigabyte downstream and upstream internet speeds through Home Telecom, which McMahon said he hopes sets Summer Wind apart from other communities.

“Society and consumer desires are moving in the direction of more and more connectivity and easier and faster communication,” McMahon said.

Construction on the apartments started earlier this month and will take approximately 21 months to complete. McMahon said leasing will begin in the fall of 2018, though, with initial residents arriving in December 2018 or January 2019.
