“No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child.” — Abraham Lincoln
It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the death of Beach Company shareholder Dr. Charles P. Darby, Jr., who passed away peacefully in his sleep on Feb. 7th, at the age of 90. Dr. Darby had a tremendous impact on our Charleston community and many people’s lives, especially the children of South Carolina.
Accolades, recognition, awards too numerous to count, but the reality is that Dr. Darby was a man of few words with maximum impact. A quiet presence that changed lives. Children and family were his life’s work. A southern gentleman to the core, Charlie’s life and passion were his family and devotion to the welfare of children.
He leaves behind an incredible legacy that will live on through his brother, five children, 17 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Please keep The Beach Company family and all those who loved Dr. Darby in your prayers during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made in his honor to the Joyce and Charles Darby Family Foundation, 310 Broad St., Charleston, SC 29401 – Attn: Katie Edwards; or to Dr. Charles P. Darby, Jr., Department of Pediatrics Research Endowment, MUSC Children’s Hospital Fund, 59 Bee Street, MSC 201, Charleston, SC 29425. For additional information, please email bazemore@musc.edu.
